The story of Savitri and Satyavan, ko Rishi Markandeya ne Yudhishthira ko Mahabharat ke Van Parva, mein sunaya tha, when he asked that any women can match devotion of Draupadi.

King Ashwapati and his wife Malati, prayed to have a child as daughter, Savitri. When it was her marriage time, Savitri ne Satyavan ko apna husband choose kiya, inspite the warning of Narad rishi, as Satyavan was cursed to die within marriage of one year, still Savitri chooses him.

As per the prediction, while Satyavan was cutting wood, he fell ill and died. Savitri sat with Satyawan under the tree Vat, commonly known as Banayan tree. Yamaraj appeared to take his soul. Savitri being devoted wife, followed Yamraj despite asking not to do so, still Savitri did.

Yamraj was happy with her devotion and love, granted her 3 boons. Savitri ne tab 1st boon ne apne saas sasur ke liye eye sight thik karne ko kaha, yamraj granted, in 2nd boon mein she asked ki satyavan ka rajaya wapas aa jaye, yamraj agreed. As soon as it was time of 3rd boon she asked ke she becomes mother of 100 sons from Satyavan, and yamraj agreed.

As soon as yamraj realized his boon has implied on Satyavan’s life, yamraj was moved by Savitri’s smartness and released soul of Satyavan. After all this, she returns to vat vrishk, banyan tree, and everything fallen in place as per her boon.
